As oil and gas facilities become increasingly power intensive, the safety and reliability of medium-voltage electrical equipment is coming under greater scrutiny. At PCIC Middle East 2026, taking place in Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia, on November 10 and 11, WEG will explore how arc-resistant variable frequency drives can deliver safety, efficiency and resilience in critical applications.
WEG’s business development manager for oil and gas in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, Florent Baldeck, will present on arc-resistant enclosure design. He will explore how compartmentalisation and controlled pressure management can help mitigate the effects of internal arc faults.
The presentation will also explore evaporative cooling technology, which helps manage heat more efficiently while reducing the amount released into electrical rooms. This can lower HVAC requirements and enable higher power density where space is at a premium.
These benefits are particularly relevant to applications including compressors, pumps, gas and water injection, and LNG facilities, where reliable drive operation is critical to maintaining plant availability and production.
“PCIC is where the industry gets into the detail of the electrical challenges behind critical oil and gas operations,” said Baldeck. “For WEG, sponsoring and presenting at PCIC is an opportunity to bring our experience into those conversations, exchange practical knowledge with engineers and explore where drive technology can help address the safety and reliability challenges facing modern facilities.”
Joable Andrade Alves, product development and engineering consultant at WEG and author of a technical paper on the same topic, said: “Medium-voltage drives play a critical role in many oil and gas processes, so their design needs to address more than electrical performance alone. Safety, availability, thermal management and lifecycle efficiency are increasingly interconnected considerations when designing electrical systems for these demanding environments.”
WEG’s medium-voltage drives portfolio includes the MVW01 and MVW3000, used across high-power applications such as compressors and pumps. Both ranges are designed to provide reliable speed control for demanding industrial processes. This drive technology supports major infrastructure in the Middle East, including Oman’s Ras Markaz crude oil storage terminal, where four MVW3000 drives serve the facility.
Drawing on WEG’s experience in medium-voltage drive development and application, its participation at PCIC will highlight how an integrated approach to safety, thermal management and equipment design can help meet the changing requirements of critical industrial facilities.
