WEG launches vertical motor for pump applications.
Global motor manufacturer, WEG has added a vertical line motor to its W60 range of industrial motors. The motor, ideal for driving vertical pumps, has been designed for excellence in a range of applications and can withstand challenging conditions. The vertical line motor is optimised to tolerate axial loads and to work with different cooling configurations, offering a versatile solution for many industrial applications.
Vertical low speed centrifugal pumps are used in a number of industries, including power generation, water and wastewater, oil and gas and mining. They transport fluids through the conversion of rotational kinetic energy to hydrodynamic energy of fluid movement and are typically powered by electric motors. However, due to the intense nature of the industries they are often used in, the pumps can be subjected to severe environments or aggressive conditions.
WEG’s W60 vertical line motor has been designed with this in mind, with hazardous area classifications for zones 2, 21 and 22. The three-phase motor has been rigorously tested according to NBR 5383, IEC 60034, NEMA MG 1 and API standards in WEG’s laboratories, ensuring compliance with international regulations.
Built to be robust, it has a rigid frame made of high-quality carbon steel and optimised bearings to withstand varying levels of axial loads either from the rotor itself or from external sources.
The motor has a rated output of 1,000 up to 7,500 kW and can be used with either a soft starter or a variable speed drive (VSD). There are also several cooling systems available for the motor to dissipate heat via an-air heat exchanger, air-water heat exchanger, or a self-ventilated system.
“Vertical pumps have specific requirements, and it is crucial that these motors are resilient to hazardous conditions,” explained Loic Kentrotis, marketing manager at WEG France SAS. “The W60 vertical line motor is versatile — its modular design makes it flexible enough to be used in all industries. Moreover, buyers can choose from different cooling systems and bearing types, making it a more tailored solution for their individual application.”
